Student expectations
Professional growth requires participation, reflection, and accountability.
Students are welcomed as developing colleagues. They receive individualized coaching and assume greater responsibility as competence and trust develop.
Professional practice
- Prepare consistently and arrive ready to participate.
- Communicate respectfully with patients, teams, and preceptors.
- Protect confidentiality and escalate patient-safety concerns promptly.
- Meet institutional standards for attendance, appearance, and conduct.
Learning behaviors
- Seek and apply evidence rather than unsupported conclusions.
- Invite feedback, respond constructively, and document growth.
- Complete presentations, projects, reflections, and portfolio work on time.
- Use AI transparently and never as a substitute for clinical judgment.
Assessment and coaching
Assessment includes direct observation, daily coaching, midpoint and final evaluations, quarterly reviews, portfolio evidence, and progressive competency development.
Support and wellness
Students should raise concerns early. Preceptors and program leaders provide clear expectations, psychologically safe coaching, reasonable support, and coordination with FCOP.
Progressive responsibility
The goal is progressively entrusted practice: close guidance at first, increasing ownership as readiness is demonstrated, and continued access to the preceptor whenever patient care or learner development requires it.
